Pancreatic cancer will be the #2 cancer killer by 2020; that is just a little over two years from now! This is due to how little is still known about this disease (and how to treat it) as well as its increased incidence. The current 5-year survival rate is roughly 7% - in other terms, 93% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 5 years and most within just a few months. This is not an old person’s disease; it targets people at all ages and impacts young and dependent families as well as those in their retirement years.

ABOUT
Innovation and collaboration is the key to solving the deadly puzzle of pancreatic cancer. It is therefore with a strong sense of urgency that a leading group of cancer researchers and clinicians in Canada and Israel have joined forces to better understand this devastating illness, first at the genomic level and then to translate those findings in clinical testing to offer patients real hope for a longer life.

Your donations will directly support the continuation of cutting-edge research which is already yielding promising results:
-
The Alex U. Soyka Pancreatic Cancer Project, a Canadian- Israeli collaboration focused on uncovering the genetic drivers of pancreatic metastatic cancer
-
COMPASS, a world-leading molecular profiling study of tumors from patients with advanced cancer

Our prestigious team of international pancreatic cancer experts includes Dr. Steven Gallinger at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre/UHN/Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Ittai Ben-Porath in concert with four other investigators at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Dr. Lincoln Stein and his team at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and Dr. Talia Golan of Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv.

Pancreatic Cancer Canada (PCCF) is a national charity with the dual focus of funding research and providing support to people living with pancreatic cancer. 100% of the PCCF research budget is focused on PCCF’s PancOne™ which encompasses 5 Centres of Excellence (and 2 Supporting Centres) across Canada in pancreatic cancer research. PancOne™ provides a structure wherein researchers collaborate on individual projects and trials with the work and funds divided based on the specialty of each Centre. The project currently being funded is focused on developing pan-Canadian integrative profiling initiatives to lead to individualized and precision- based treatments for all patients with pancreatic cancer.

Funding for this event will also go towards the expansion of PancOne™ to Israel.
Thanks to the vision of the Soyka Pancreatic Cancer Research Project, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada has a team of five researchers who have been collaborating with scientists at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research and Toronto’s Princess Margaret Centre.

The multi-pronged goals of these research and trial programs are:
-
detailed molecular analysis of patient tumors, in real time, to reveal their particular genetic composition and develop protocols for optimal matched treatment;
-
development of disease models that allow the detailed investigation of how pancreatic cancer develops;
-
testing of new diagnosis and treatment methods;
-
and development of a strategy for early detection of the cancer, which would lead to reduced mortality.
